Parkinson’s Disease Symptoms
Using Theracycle as Part of Traditional Parkinson’s Disease Treatments
Theracycle is a motor-powered, computer-monitored exercise machine that may help to relieve Parkinson’s disease symptoms through a programmed workout. The unique Theracycle motor delivers a highly effective exercise workout aimed to complement your current Parkinson’s disease treatments. Many Theracycle users have reduced the some of the physical symptoms of Parkinson’s disease including:
Bradykinesia (Slow Movement)
Bradykinesia refers to a patient’s slow movements. In addition to bradykinesia, the Parkinson’s patient may also experience incomplete movements, trouble with initiating movement, and/or sudden discontinuation of ongoing movement. Parkinson patients who have bradykinesia may walk with short, shuffling steps also known as festination or gait). Bradykinesia as well as rigidity may also transpire in one’s facial muscles, which may reduce the patient’s range of facial expressions and/or result in a “mask-like” manifestation. To learn more about our bradykinesia exercise equipment, and how other Theracycle users have found relief from this Parkinson’s disease symptom, fill out the form on the right-hand tab.
Gait
Parkinson’s gait is a distinctive Parkinson’s disease symptom, which is characterized by short, shuffling steps while walking. As the disease progresses, becomes increasingly problematic, often leading to halting in place. To learn more about our gait exercise equipment, and how other Theracycle users have found relief from this Parkinson’s disease symptom, fill out the form on the right-hand tab.
Akinesia (Rigidity)
Rigidity often referred to as increased muscle tone, denotes muscle inflexibility or stiffness. During normal motion, muscles stretch as they move, and relax when at rest. In rigidity, one’s muscle tone within the affected limb is always stiff, will not relax, and may also result in a decreased range of motion. For example, a person who has akinesia may not be able to swing his or her arms when walking because the muscles are too tight. Rigidity is more than just leg discomfort as it can cause severe pain and cramping. Tremors
About 70% of people with Parkinson’s experience a slight tremor in the early stage of the disease—in either the hand or foot on one side of the body, or less commonly in the jaw or face. The tremor appears as a "beating" or oscillating movement. Since this Parkinson’s disease symptom usually appears when a person’s muscles are relaxed, it is called "resting tremor.” This means that the affected body part trembles when it is not doing work, and it usually subsides when a person begins an action. The tremor often spreads to the other side of the body as the disease progresses, but remains most apparent on the original side of occurrence. Postural Instability (Impaired Balance and Coordination)
Parkinson’s disease patients often encounter impaired balance, loss of coordination, as well as instability when standing. These Parkinson’s symptoms, combined with other PD symptoms such as bradykinesia, increase the chance of falling. Patients with balance problems may have difficulty making turns or abrupt movements. They may go through periods of "freezing,” which is when a person feels stuck to the ground and finds it difficult to start walking. Slowed movement or even curtailed movement can also affect patients’ speaking and/or swallowing. To learn more about how Theracycle exercise equipment may improve balance and coordination as it has helped other Theracycle user, fill out the form on the right-hand tab.
